2023: Finally, Rep Onuigbo Clinches APC Senatorial Ticket For Abia Central …As Irregularities disrupt exercise
At last, the storm that engulfed the atmosphere, following the just concluded primary election for the Abia Central Senatorial zone, of the State’s Chapter of All Progressives Congress, APC, has quelled.
This is even as the incumbent member representing Ikwuano/ Umuahia North and South Federal Constituency has finally been declared winner of the exercise, amidst alleged electoral irregularities that virtually rendered the exercise inconclusive.
The final result which was eventually released by the electoral body had Rep. Onuigbo defeat his counterpart, Hon. Henry Ikoh with a total number of five votes.
Announcing the winner of the Abia Central Senatorial Primaries, the Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Mr Izuchukwu Okere, said Onuigbo polled one hundred and fifty seven (157) votes, defeating his counterpart, Chief Henry Ikoh who polled one hundred and fifty two (152) votes.
It could be recalled that the battle between the two contestants of Abia Central Senatorial zone, held at Chidiebere Park, Umuahia had recorded series of malpractices, as both parties accused each other of compromise.
Moreso, part of the disruptions as encountered in the course of the exercise was attributed to the electoral body who was pointedly accused by both contestants of disenfranchising the people of Ikwuano LGA, the immediate Community of the duo of Rep. Onuigbo and Chief Ikoh.
Addressing newsmen, Chief Onuigbo thanked both the delegates and APC supporters in the zone for the confidence they reposed on him during the party’s senatorial primaries, assuring that APC would come out victorious during the 2023 general elections.
However, some aggrieved members of the party, who initially were aspirants of the same position, among whom was former Sen Nkechi Nwogu, had withdrawn from the race, citing confusion and irregularities on the delegate list, among others.
Therefore, with Rep. Sam Onuigbo as the flag bearer of the APC’s Senatorial District, he would be meeting at the 2023 general election, with his Ikwuano brother, Col. Austin Akobundu, the flag bearer of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, alongside Ahamdi Nweke of the All progressive Grand Alliance (APGA).
